Why the fares step up as you go west
The bands follow distance. The south-eastern towns — Madison, Chatham, Florham Park, East Hanover, Whippany — sit on NJ-24 or I-280 within twenty miles of the terminals. Morristown and the townships around it are a little further. Parsippany and the Route 46 towns come next, then the Denville–Boonton–Montville belt, then Dover and Randolph, and finally the lake and Highlands towns in the north-west, where the drive is forty minutes before you even reach I-287.
How long the drive takes
Before 6 AM, most of the county is thirty to fifty-five minutes from Newark. Between 7:00 and 9:30 AM, add twenty to thirty minutes for the I-80/I-287 merge and NJ-24 into Newark. The evening rush, 4:00 to 7:00 PM, is similar in the other direction. Each town page gives its own times, because the route from Butler is not the route from Chester.
When a car beats parking
For a trip of more than a few days, a car both ways usually costs less than a week of airport parking plus fuel and tolls — and nobody has to drive home tired after a late landing.
