Kinney Lawn becomes Kinnelon
From the 1880s Francis Kinney, of the Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company, bought up more than 5,000 acres of these hills and built himself a summer “cottage” he called Smoke Rise — a translation of the Native name for the mountains, where a heavy mist often lifts at sunset.
He called the estate Kinney Lawn. When the area broke away from Pequannock Township as a borough in 1922, with only about 400 full-time residents, it adopted a shortened form of that name: Kinnelon.
Smoke Rise and the gate
After Morris Kinney died in 1945, the estate passed to a family friend, and in 1946 it began its new life as The Smoke Rise Club — one of the earliest community-club developments in the country. It is a private, gated community with its own roads and lakes.
