Taxi Service in Wharton, NJ — 24/7 Cabs from the Old Canal Borough
Wharton is small — about two and a quarter square miles just west of Dover — but it was put together from five places rather than one. Port Oram, Irondale, Luxemburg, Maryville and Mount Pleasant were mine camps and furnace-worker settlements, and on 28 June 1895 their voters chose, 143 to 51, to become a single borough. It was called Port Oram until 16 April 1902, when it took the name of Joseph Wharton of the Wharton Steel Company.
For us it is next-door ground. Our base at 512 Logan Drive in Landing is roughly five road miles away, which makes Wharton one of the quickest places in the county for a car to reach — and most of what we do here is getting people out to the airports and back again.
Wharton taxi and car service fares
Every fare is agreed when you book and does not move afterwards — not for traffic on I-80, and not for a 4 AM start.

| JFK | from $205 |

Tolls and tax are not included and are added at the end of the trip. Gratuity is at your discretion. We tell you the toll cost up front.
Five old settlements, one pickup address
The old village names have not entirely gone. Long-time residents still say Irondale or Mount Pleasant, and the streets climb and bend around the old mine ground in ways that a map pin does not always make obvious.
When you book, the street and house number are enough — but if the address sits on one of the hillside roads above the borough, tell us which approach the driveway faces. It is a small thing that saves a driver circling a block at five in the morning.
Where the canal boats came down
Wharton started life as an ore-shipping port on the Morris Canal, which ran from Newark to Phillipsburg from 1831 and carried iron ore and pig iron out of the Morris County fields. When the mines closed, silk mills took over as the town’s main employer.
The canal is not just history here. Hugh Force Canal Park, at 100 West Central Avenue, keeps a watered quarter-mile of it and Lock 2 East — once known as Bird’s Lock — which the borough spent sixteen years restoring alongside the lock tender’s house. It works again, lifting and lowering the water eight feet, and it is the centrepiece of Wharton Canal Day, when visitors come in from across the region and parking near the park runs out fast.
The route we drive to Newark Airport
From Wharton to EWR is roughly 33 miles. The borough sits right on I-80 exit 34, where NJ-15 meets the interstate, so the car is on the highway within a couple of minutes: I-80 east, I-287 south, NJ-24 east and in to the terminals.
- Before 6:00 AM — about 45 minutes.
- 7:00 to 9:30 AM — the I-80/I-287 merge is the slow point. Allow 70 minutes.
- 4:00 to 7:00 PM — 70 to 75 minutes, with terminal traffic at the end.
Leave three and a half hours before a domestic departure before 9 AM, and four and a quarter for an international one.
No station of its own — Dover is the one next door
Wharton has no railway station. Rail commuters use Dover, a couple of miles east, where the Morristown Line trains start and finish, and the daily question is whether to leave a car in the Dover lot or get dropped.
We do both directions: a morning run down to the platform and an evening pickup when the train gets in late or the weather has turned. If you ride the same trains every week, a standing booking is simpler than calling each day.
Who rides with us in Wharton
A compact, working borough on a highway junction gives a practical mix:
- Airport travellers who would rather not pay a week of Newark parking.
- Rail commuters heading to and from Dover station.
- Shift workers whose hours start or finish when buses are not running.
- Families and visitors coming in for Canal Day or the park.
- Older residents going to Saint Clare’s in Dover or to appointments in Morristown.
Booking a taxi in Wharton
Call (973) 306-7075 at any hour. Give us the street and number, and for an airport run the flight. Being five miles from our base means a same-day local ride is rarely a problem.
For Canal Day or any event at the park, tell us whether you want the drop at West Central Avenue itself or a street away — on a busy afternoon the second is often quicker.
Wharton to New York City
Taking the train means getting to Dover first and, on most trips, changing on the way in. For a group, a late return or a day with luggage, a direct car into Manhattan is from $165 one-way, tolls added at the end — and I-80 east starts at the edge of the borough.
Nights, early starts and bad weather
We dispatch twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The hillside streets above the old mine ground are the first to ice in winter, so if snow is forecast tell us when you book and we will set the pickup earlier rather than cut into your airport margin.
Late-night returns from Newark or New York are routine, and you get a named driver rather than whoever an app happens to find at 1 AM.
Local rides around Wharton
Short trips are quoted flat before you get in: into Dover, out along Route 15 to Mine Hill or towards Jefferson, over to Rockaway Townsquare, or back to Landing and Kenvil. The price is set by distance band, not by a running meter.
Why book us instead of a rideshare app
A fixed fare agreed at booking. A car assigned in advance, so an early departure is covered before you go to bed. A driver based five miles away who knows the borough’s hill roads by name. And no surge on Canal Day, on a holiday weekend, or at the moment a storm arrives.
Groups, weddings and occasions
A Sprinter van seats up to twelve — one vehicle to the airport instead of three cars and three parking bills, or one ride home after a wedding or a night out so nobody has to drive. For weddings we keep to the timings, not the mileage.
Coming home to Wharton from the airport
Book the return with the outbound trip. Give us the flight number and we track it, so a late landing does not cost you the car or change the fare. Thirty-three miles is not a journey anyone wants to start arranging in the arrivals hall.
Our Fleet Includes:
- Luxury sedan — up to three passengers with luggage.
- Executive SUV — up to six passengers, room for extra bags.
- Sprinter van — up to twelve passengers for groups and events.
- Wheelchair-accessible vehicle — available on request when you book.
Around Wharton
Dover sits immediately east, Mine Hill to the south-west, Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township to the north-east, and Landing, Kenvil and the rest of Roxbury to the west. All are covered from the same base and priced from the same distance bands.

Explore Our Frequently Asked Questions
What Wharton callers ask us most.
How much is a taxi from Wharton to Newark Airport?
From $109 one-way in a sedan, confirmed when you book. It is roughly 33 miles via I-80, I-287 and NJ-24 — about 45 minutes before 6 AM and around 70 in the morning peak. Tolls and tax are added at the end.
How quickly can you get a car to Wharton?
Our base in Landing is about five road miles away, so a local pickup is usually quick. For airport runs we still ask you to book ahead so the car is assigned rather than found on the morning.
How early should I leave Wharton for a morning flight?
Three and a half hours before a domestic flight departing before 9 AM, and four and a quarter for international. The I-80 and I-287 merge is where the time goes.
Is there a train station in Wharton?
No. The nearest station is Dover, a couple of miles east, where Morristown Line trains start and end. We run people there and back, and set up standing bookings for regular commuters.
Can you drop us at Hugh Force Canal Park for Canal Day?
Yes. The park is at 100 West Central Avenue. On Canal Day parking near it fills up, so a drop-off and an agreed pickup time is usually easier than bringing your own car.
Do you operate in Wharton around the clock?
Yes, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, holidays included. Early airport runs and late returns are the bookings we take most here.
What if it snows before my pickup?
Tell us when you book. The hillside streets in the borough ice before the main roads, so we move the pickup earlier instead of taking the time out of your airport margin.
Can I book the return from Newark to Wharton?
Yes, and it is best booked with the outbound. We track the flight number, so a delayed arrival keeps the car and the agreed fare.
How many passengers can you carry?
A sedan takes up to three with luggage, an executive SUV up to six, and a Sprinter van up to twelve. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle is also available if you ask when booking.
Are tolls included in the fare?
No. Tolls and tax are added at the end of the trip, and we tell you the toll cost up front so there are no surprises. Gratuity is at your discretion.
