The iron rush that started with an ice house
In 1875 a man digging the foundation for an ice house behind a Main Street home struck iron ore. Within fifteen years some thirty-five mines had opened across the township, several of them on Main Street itself, and in 1878 a furnace went up on what is still called Furnace Road to turn the ore into pig iron.
It did not last. Richer deposits in Minnesota’s Mesabi Range undercut Chester, and by the 1890s every mine had shut. The township went back to farming, and the old mine ground is why some back roads here dip and turn in ways that surprise a driver new to them.
Main Street: eighty shops in colonial buildings
Chester’s downtown is now a shopping destination in its own right — more than eighty independent shops, many in original colonial buildings with narrow doorways and uneven floorboards: antiques, sweets, furniture makers and galleries along a short, walkable stretch of Main Street.
On a fine weekend, parking is the problem. A drop at one end of Main Street and a pickup at the other, at a time you choose, takes the car out of the equation — and for a group coming in for the day, one vehicle is simpler than three looking for spaces.
Cooper Gristmill and Hacklebarney
West of the centre on Route 513 is the Cooper Gristmill, built in 1826 on the Black River, where the water wheel still grinds grain; it is run by the Morris County Park Commission. Just past it, State Park Road leads to Hacklebarney State Park — a former iron-ore site turned hemlock gorge, with the Black River running through a glacial valley.
Both are places people want to walk from rather than drive back from. We drop at the mill or the park entrance and collect at an agreed time, which lets a family or a group do a one-way walk without shuttling cars.
The route we drive to Newark Airport
From Chester to EWR is about 37 miles. The usual route is Route 24 east through Mendham to Morristown, then I-287 south and NJ-24 east; if Morristown is jammed we can drop down Route 206 instead and join the interstates further south.
