The Black Horse and the old turnpike
At 1 West Main Street stands the Black Horse Tavern, dating to 1742. It began as the farmhouse of Ebenezer Byram, one of Mendham’s founders, and became a stagecoach stop on the trade route between Newark and Scranton — the barn was the stable. It is billed as New Jersey’s oldest continuously operating restaurant, and it reopened in January 2025 after a long restoration.
