Netcong is a compact borough on the far western edge of Morris County, where the county meets Sussex across the water of Lake Musconetcong. It began life as South Stanhope, a settlement of miners who worked in the Stanhope iron industry next door, and took the name Netcong in 1889 when its post office opened.

Our base at 512 Logan Drive in Landing is about four road miles away. Netcong is a quick local run for us, and the start of one of our longer airport runs.

A borough carved from two townships

On 23 October 1894 Netcong was incorporated as a borough from parts of both Mount Olive and Roxbury townships. Its name comes from the Musconetcong River, a Lenape name usually translated as something like “rapid stream” or “grass creek”.

The borough is small enough to walk across, which is why most of our Netcong work is not about getting around town — it is about getting out of it: to the airports, to hospitals and to trains.

    Lake Musconetcong, the canal’s reservoir

Lake Musconetcong is man-made. It was created in 1846 as the Morris Canal’s Stanhope Reservoir, to keep the canal topped up, and it now forms the boundary between Netcong and Stanhope — and between Morris and Sussex counties.

Homes on the lakefront are reached by narrow roads, and in summer the lake draws visitors. Tell us the road and which side of the lake you are on, and whether you are in Netcong or across in Stanhope.

The station that was Morris County’s last stop

Netcong station opened on 16 January 1854 and was rebuilt between 1901 and June 1903. For the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western it was the last stop in Morris County, and much of the town’s business grew up around it.

It still has NJ Transit service today. We take commuters there in the morning, collect them in the evening, and for trains that do not stop here we run to Dover instead.
